YaHei;">魏源到任后他首先想到的就是百姓，他废除原有的一些苛捐杂税，减轻徭役，让百姓得以休养生息。为了更好的了解民间疾苦，他深入到老百姓中去调查民情，兴利除弊，与百姓同甘共苦，因而深得民心。魏源为了表明自己为民办事的决心，特意在东台县衙里题写了三副楹联，这三副楹联一直流传至今，在县衙庭柱上所撰楹联为“上有青天，一片冰心盟上帝；民皆赤子，满腔热血注民瘼。”这幅对联既是魏源为官的自警之言，也是表明他为官的心迹。体现了他的为官之道就是要把百姓的民生放在首位。</span></p><p YaHei;">魏源在东台为官并非一帆风顺，他在接任知县后，就遇到一件棘手的事：清代的漕务，弊端重重，除了“浮收勒折”之外，还有“将值交卸，截串先征”的陋规。有的知县在离任前，预先征收，中饱私囊，将一笔糊涂账留给后任。魏源的前任知县预征漕银四千两，接任后，欠款悬宕无着，上级追征时，魏源宁可自己筹借赔垫，而没有将这一额外负担转嫁给百姓。这使他的生活困苦不堪，他在给好友胡林翼的信中写道：“全家数十口，空无所有；先人的棺木也未得迁葬。”</span></p><p
